Vapor-X Cooling

Vapor Chamber Technology is based on the same principles as heatpipe technology. A liquid coolant is vaporised at a hot surface, the resulting vapor is condensed at a cold surface then the liquid is returned to the hot surface. The recirculation process is controlled by a patented wick system. SAPPHIRE Vapor-X flattens the whole system into a slim chamber - which in the graphics application is mounted in contact with the surface of the graphics chip.


Black Diamond Choke

Choke is an important component of the graphics card. By working with the component engineer, Sapphire’s patent pending choke is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than a normal choke. The graphics card will be more reliable and save energy.

Full Solid Cap Design

Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitor for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20 °C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten, when the operational temperature increases by 20 °C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.

    Editor's Choice

    Sapphire did a great job in the design as far as I'm concerned, because although it's not the prettiest card out there, it serves its function well, and that's to cool well enough to keep the card working well (overclocking included) while remaining as quiet as possible. I can honestly say that there is no comparison between this and the reference card where that's concerned. Although it will be tough to tell the difference if you're running a machine with numerous audible fans, it's when you slow the other fans down that you begin to really notice the difference. Whereas our reference HD 4870 was clearly distinguishable among all the other fans in our machine, Sapphire's Vapor-X has to have an intent ear to pick it out of the crowd. It does its job very well.

    The cooling performance of this card is outstanding. The fan is practically inaudible with the card in my test system sitting three feet from me. The temperatures I measured fell in the 65 to 71 (idle to load) Celsius range with the driver controlling the fan speed. The Vapor-X cooling has an added benefit for overclockers. Cooler temperatures usually equate to higher potential overclocks. Again, this rings true with the Sapphire HD 4870 2GB Vapor-X Edition. The Vapor Chamber cooling is worth the price of admission alone if you are tired of the hair dryers ATI throws on the reference based cards. Your ears will thank you. Vapor chamber cooling, high end components, custom built PCB, 2GB of memory, native HDMI, excellent overclocking, silent cooling, what more could you want? Sapphire has built another winner when it comes to cool running performance video cards. The company is not afraid to step outside the box and make the cards its customers need.
