The SAPPHIRE HD 4870 1GB TOXIC Edition features the award winning Vapor-X cooler, SAPPHIRE’s implementation of Vapor Chamber Technology (VCT) first introduced by SAPPHIRE over a year ago on its ATOMIC and TOXIC series of high performance graphics cards. On this new model, the Vapor-X cooling solution is used to efficiently remove heat from the core logic. So the heat from the GPU, memory and other components is carried away by the vapor chamber together with three heatpipes and heatsinks cooled by a thermally controlled fan venting outside the case.     The biggest beef I have had with the ATI HD4 series cards has been the temperatures. Moving into the 90 Celsius range is not what I would consider optimal. This is something that Sapphire has taken care of with the HD4870 1GB Toxic thanks to the Vapor Chamber cooling. When manually controlled and overclocked, the temperatures I was able to achieve were in the mid-50C range and no higher than 57C. The compromise is that when the CCC controls the fan speeds the temperatures never hit 70C and peaked at 67C in my testing. A benefit to this is that the HD4870 1 GB Toxic can be overclocked right from the factory. The Toxic offers a value for the performance and cooling it delivers.

    Sapphire Technology comes back with an upgraded version of their HD4870 Toxic Edition, this time with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory. When I first saw this card the most obvious eye catcher was the non-reference cooling technique applied. The looks alone are truly both a beauty and a beast. True PC gamers and enthusiasts will appreciate the Sapphire HD4870 Toxic Edition's outstanding cooling improvements over the regular stock version. The already overclocked graphics card can be pushed to further limits thanks to its innovative "Vapour chamber Technology". The bundle in the retail package is complete and a great value added bonus to what you are getting though I would have liked to see a recent game included.

    Sapphire continues to be innovative and brings new cards to the open market for consumers to pick. Expanding the Toxic family is the 4870 1GB DDR5 card, utilizing 3 heatpipes as part of the advanced Vapor-X cooler. The card from factory overclocked to 780/1000, 30 Mhz faster for the core and 100 Mhz faster on the memory. With recent price drop announcement on the 4870 family by ATi, this card becomes very attractive. The card is priced well under the 4850X2 but the real world performance shows that it is just as good as one. The only place you'll notice a difference between the 4850X2 and 4870 is with synthetic benchmarking and on your VISA bill. It's pretty easy to recommend this card to friends and family.

    With the Sapphire HD 4870 Toxic Overclock Edition, Sapphire has closed the door on the 3800 series with a bang. Not only does a single 4870 outdistance the previous generation even with the X2, it also comes in an an amazing price tag. I haven't seen a price to performance value like this since the first 8800 GTs. The performance you get for around $245 is often on par with the more expensive GTX 280 and everything runs nicely with the single processor. With the HD4870 Toxic 512 MB edition we discussed the price premium for the Toxic series as the only real drawback. Now by adding 1 GB of GDDR5 to the outstanding Vapor-X cooling and dropping the prices the Sapphire Toxic series have become the go to series for mainstream gamers and budget minded performance builds. I expect these cards to continue to drop in price making a second 4870 Toxic an attractive upgrade as the year progresses. Stuck in an older generation still? It's finally making sense to make the jump to a 4870 and with Sapphire you just can't go wrong.
