Kick Ass Award by Maximum PC

The Radeon 4850 X2 delivers astounding performance compared to the single-GPU boards in its price range, spanking the Radeon 4870 and the GeForce GTX 280, with none of the pitfalls that have plagued dual-GPU boards in the past. In our performance testing, the 4850 X2 unseated the fastest single-GPU videocards, the GeForce GTX 280 and Radeon HD 4870, in almost every benchmark. With a street price that’s less than $300, the 4850 X2 is a great deal for owners of lower-resolution 22-inch monitors. However, if you use a 24-inch or 30-inch panel, it’s probably worth ponying up for a card with a peppier memory pipeline.

So did Sapphire fill a niche void and provide a card to the consumer that wanted a dual core card without the killer huge price? You bet. This card at around US$275-$300 at the time of this review is a great deal and will have anyone enjoying the latest games with higher resolutions and quality settings while still providing decent framerates. And with 2Gb of memory onboard, you shouldn't be running out of onboard memory while playing any games on the market today. But regardless, even without the core overclocking, the card is still a tremendous value and should be considered a great investment for a little bit more money over a single core HD4870.

At that price especially, we find the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 the best midrange 3D hardware currently available. In addition to demonstrating very fast performance, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 is also unique in supporting up to four displays on one PC. We recommend this card to any gamer interested in a reasonably priced investment in greater 3D power. Even if it's a relative power hog, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 brings so much speed and utility to the table it's hard for us to recommend another midrange 3D card.

Benchmark through benchmark the Sapphire HD 4850 X2 showed what it was capable of: going for about $300, the video card is situated nicely in the current hierarchy of the heavy-hitter, high-end cards currently available. The only real battle in our tests was the GTX 280 versus the Sapphire HD 4850 X2. In this battle, the edge is earned by the HD 4850 X2 -- less expensive and faster, it's the champion here. Unless people are very averse to going with a dual-GPU card over a single GPU model, the HD 4850 X2 is the way to go if you are looking for awesome performance around $300. The Sapphire HD 4850 X2 is a complete package. It executes like a pro.

I didn't know what to expect when diving into testing this card, but it goes without saying that I'm quite impressed. For a $300 offering, it scales well in performance when compared to slightly lesser-expensive cards, such as the GTX 260/216. For the extra $30 - $50, you get a card that works much better with games at very high resolutions, or with copious amounts of anti-aliasing. As with all of the current high-end cards, the HD 4850 X2 excels at the highest-resolution available, 2560x1600. If that's the resolution you play at, this card is the card to buy.
